Elephant Shelf live

Elephant Shelf live

Elephant Shelf is about songs, rhythms and entertainment. Their original songs embodying all that is best in Rhythm & Blues, Swing, Blues, Country, the great American songbook, and much else.

Rhythms?, “Yes” says Vicky, “we like to draw on classic styles and rhythms. We sometimes get Terry to play us a jazz rhythm or a funk rhythm and then we’ll improvise over it to see what comes out. They have says Vicky, ‘Hours of recorded tracks and outlines for
new songs, all ready for future use’.

The band is blessed with fascinating individual musicians giving a vivid coloration to the music -

Diana Stone, pianist and violinist with her flair filled & eclectic mix of Gypsy, jazz , and classical influences;
Terry McInerny with true swing on drums.
Robbie Charles with electric swing bass and now string bass;
Rosie Swan with a voice that almost catches fire;
Vicky Martin who writes much of the material and pulls it together
with imaginative arrangements.

The band cites multiple influences, Keith Richards and the Stones, Bob Dylan, Martin Simpson, Miles Davis, Richard Thompson, Arthur Askey- all of whom say the band, “Have stayed true to real music”. The band also love of Vaudeville and Old -Time Music-Hall saying “We really respect all those who trod the boards for so many years”.

This comes together in a live act that was described by Barry Goldberg of the Electric flag and Bob Dylan sideman as ‘Really rocking’.

As Vicky describes it “We draw on the classic well loved sounds from the 60’s 70’s and beyond, add our own touches to make it our own music. We never consciously copy anyone else’s arrangements. We deliberately do it different”. “…and we add a large dash of good humour and a love of entertaining. That is us; Elephant Shelf.”

ELEPHANT SHELF are unique a true one-off.

Jerry Donahue (born September 24, 1946, Manhattan, New York City) is an American guitarist and producer primarily known for his work in the British folk rock scene as a member of Fotheringay and Fairport Convention as well as being a member of the rock guitar trio Hellecasters.

Jerry Donahue & Don MorterJerry Donahue & Don Morter

Donahue was born in New York, the son of big band saxophonist Sam Donahue and actress Patricia Donahue and grew up in Los Angeles. Encouraged by his parents, Donahue took classical guitar lessons as a child, but it was Gerry McGee (who later joined The Ventures) who made the biggest impression on him, when the 14-year-old Donahue saw him playing behind-the-nut bends at a performance at the Sea Witch, emulating Earl Scruggs’ banjo technique. Donahue then took lessons from McGee. Regarding regular bends on the fretboard, Donahue cites Amos Garrett as a major influence. Other influences in his formative years were Chet Atkins, Duane Eddy, The Shadows and The Ventures; later influences were Clarence White, Danny Gatton, Albert Lee, Tommy Emmanuel and Robben Ford.[1][2][3]

After moving to England, Donahue soon became a respected member of the developing British folk rock scene. As a band member, he played with Poet And The One Man Band, Fotheringay and Fairport Convention. Later he recorded and/or toured with artists such as Joan Armatrading, Gerry Rafferty, Robert Plant, Elton John, The Proclaimers, Johnny Hallyday, George Harrison, Cliff Richard, Chris Rea, Warren Zevon, Bonnie Raitt, Hank Marvin, Roy Orbison, Nanci Griffith and The Yardbirds. In 1990 he founded the guitar trio The Hellecasters with Will Ray and John Jorgenson.[3] They recorded several instrumental albums and frequently toured in the 1990s. Donahue has released instructional videotapes and more recently has produced solo projects including Sandy Denny’s Gold Dust (1998) and The Animals’ Instinct (2004)[4] as well as finishing the second album by his short-lived Folk rock band Fotheringay in 2008.[5]

Recently, Donahue formed the band Gathering – Legends of Folk Rock with Clive Bunker, Rick Kemp, Ray Jackson, Doug Morter and daughter Kristina Donahue.[6]

Lord Clement-Jones' live music bill will have its 3rd Reading in the House of Lords next Tuesday, 9th February

Lord Clement-Jones’ live music bill will have its 3rd Reading in the House of Lords next Tuesday, 9th February:

If enacted the bill would exempt a range of venues up to 200 capacity from entertainment licensing for live music between 8am and midnight, and allow up to two musicians to perform anywhere unamplified or minimally amplified.  The bill is supported by UK Music, the original Live Music Forum, the National Campaign for the Arts, Equity and the Musicians Union.

The Bill passed the Lords Committee stage on Monday 1st February without amendment or opposition:

If progress continues unobstructed, it will go to the Commons.  Its success there is dependent on the government.  In reality, it is unlikely that the Bill will receive Commons debate as the Government will be unwilling to find time before the general election for a Bill they do not support.

But as The Publican reported yesterday: ‘Although the bill is a private members’ bill and is unlikely to become law, it could help to effect the government’s final plans over live music licensing’:

Meanwhile the police have been making friendlier noises about live music.  The original Live Music Forum, founded by campaigner Phil Little in the 1990s, has published a correspondence with the police in which they state:

‘The vast majority of live music events serve to provide considerable pleasure and social benefit without implication for policing or public safety. In a very small number of cases there is clear evidence of association of criminality with events or acts and that obviously needs to be dealt with as the intelligence and circumstances indicate, however, this is clearly the exception and not the norm.’
[Letter to Phil Little from Commander Paul Minton, Chief of Staff, Association of Chief Police Officers, received 13/01/2010
See: http://www.livemusicforum.co.uk/ and follow the link]

On 21 January Phil Little wrote back asking whether or not the police will support the exemptions in the live music bill and the government’s own consultation.  A reply is expected soon.
